Winners of the Lamington Cup at Brisbane Golf Club
HGQ members Bruce Collins and Dave Mansfield won The Brisbane Golf Club’s annual Lamington Cup, using hickory clubs.
The Lamington Cup, a knockout Foursomes competition, named after Lord Lamington, a former Governor of Queensland and foundation President of BGC, was first played in 1898.
Bruce and Dave were one of eight teams to qualify back in August, and moved through their matches to win 1-up in the final held on 10 December 2022.
Bruce described the result as truly a memorable day and a very special achievement.
"To win the event with hickory clubs, against players using normal modern-day clubs was quite an achievement" he said.
Dave snapped his mid iron hitting his second shot on the 17th but was still able to drive the ball to the front of the green. From there they won the hole, to go one-up and hold their opponents off at the 18th.
HGQ member Alan Grieve created history back in 2017 when he won a Monthly Medal using hickory clubs, which reportedly was the first time the feat had been achieved since World War One.
