Monthly Event - 7 July 2023

All players gathered on the first tee, as usual President Rob was getting the 20 players sorted into playing groups for a starting time of 2.30pm.  

It was beautiful sunny day and the course had benefited from heavy rain the previous day.  Ross Bishop had been out early to set the course.  Thanks again Ross.

We heard that some wonderful golf shots were played and some less wonderful with the bunkers getting a good workout on the first hole.  Peter Monks finally surrendered to the sand but emerged with his composure intact.

At 3.30pm the westerly winds strengthened and holes 4, 5, 6 and 7 became a real challenge.

The post gathering lived up to its reputation of like minded people enjoying each others company and a refreshing drink accompanied by hot chips and pizza while awaiting President Rob's announcement of the winning scores.

Rob started by welcoming players from New Zealand and our lady member.  The winner with a fine score of 18 points was the very popular Chris Cooper.  Chris told us how his much loved Ben Sayers putter had saved the day on many holes and declared it NOT FOR SALE.  Well done Chris.

2nd place was the very consistent David Jones.  Your reporter had a surprising 14 stableford points to just edge out President Rob for 5th place.

With the Queensland Championships starting in 3 days, it was the perfect worm up for most players.

Did you know

In the summer of 1930 Bobby Jones, a 28 year old amateur golfer, in 4 months won the British Amateur Championship, the Open Championship, the United States Amateur Championship and finally the United States Open Championship.  An achievement so extraordinary they called it the 'Grand Slam'.

He achieved this using hickory shafts and golf balls that stopped at least 30 yard shorter than today's ball.

No one has ever repeated it.

Bobby Jones was born march 17 in 1902 and died in 1971.
