Rain Rain Rain
There was no doubt that RQ needed some rain before the upcoming Australian PGA, but to have rain on a Hickory Friday was a bit tough.
Twenty players braved the conditions for the game at Royal Queensland Golf Course. While 20 started in very ominous conditions only 10 finished the 9 holes. The soggy 10 returned to the clubhouse to find the other half of the field in a very jolly mood, warmly tucked up enjoying fine wines and hot snacks. Apparently the dry half were thinking about sending out a search party but opened another bottle of Pinot instead.
Despite the conditions the soggy half produced some good golf and returned some fine scores. The winner was Grathan Leatherbarrow from Cooroy with 20 points. Greg Cooper is showing good form and returned 16 points for second place. A countback for third place put Robyn Wilson in front of World Champion Bruce Collins.
Congratulations to all winners
The day’s event was marked by a great sense of enthusiasm which created a really strong message that Queensland Hickory is going from strength to strength and to be a member is a privilege.

Recommended Reading - The Greatest of Them All - The Legend of Bobby Jones published in 1996
‘Bob Jones was arguably the most dominant golfer of all time.
He won thirteen major championships in all, including all four majors in 1930.
Perhaps the feat in all of sport that will never be duplicated.
Incredibly he was an amateur who played only sparingly and retired at the age of 28.
Through his exploits and deeds he captured the imagination of people ….. golfers and non golfers alike …. on both sides of the Atlantic.
But Bob Jones was more than just a golfer.
For his accomplishments and pursuits in the other facets of his life rivaled those on the links …. his high level of educational achievement, his cultural interests and his sense of modesty and fair play.’
He did not flaunt his trophies and he kept his medals out of sight He was greatly respected and his behaviour at all times was that of a gentleman.
A great book for Hickory enthusiasts to enjoy!
