2024 Queensland Hickory Championships
The turnout for our 2024 championship held on Sunday 21 and Monday 22 April was poor, due to the time of year that clashed with holidays, pennants, weather and other events. Nevertheless, there was fierce competition to become the Queensland Champ. The weather was not kind to us as torrential rain on the Sunday only abated minutes before tee off on the first day at the Brisbane Golf Club. It was soggy under foot and not a lot of run on the fairway. Alan Grieve, playing on his home course, was the clubhouse leader after the first day. A shot behind was David Mansfield and new member, Peter Kyffin. The participants enjoyed a cheese plater thanks to the Brisbane Golf Club.
Day two at Royal Queensland Golf Club brought blustery winds gusting to 40 kph which influenced shot making but David Mansfield came the fore. It was tough going with only David breaking 90 on the day with a credible 87! In second place was Peter Kyffin with a 90. Peter took out the Earp Monks Shield for the best net score.
Winner of the Stableford event was former Board member Arthur O’Shea who was one month shy of his 90th birthday! The participants enjoyed a delightful presentation dinner at RQ on Monday evening. The Board will have to consider hold the championship later in the year next year.
